Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) is an economic empowerment initiative thatwas introduced by the government of South Africa in 2003/2004. The intent ofbroad-based empowerment is to distribute wealth across a broader spectrum ofSouth African inhabitants that are regarded as the “previously disadvantaged”. Thisincludes the Black African, Coloured and Indian populations in South Africa. B-BBEE seeks to balance out past injustices where non-Whites were prohibited from participatingin the formal economy during the apartheid era.
